What Parkinson’s has taught me – OFFENSE

About Derek Torry
Diagnosed in 2012 at age 40, Derek has Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease. Like many others, PD has pushed him to be more active than before his diagnosis. He an optimist who is eager to do all he can to make a cure for PD a reality and encourage other Parkies as they live life with PD. He is involved with several Parkinson’s organizations and believes we need to be proactive about combating the symptoms and finding a cure.

Whether you have Parkinson’s, cancer or another disease/disability, there comes a time in your journey in which you need to gather yourself and decide to fight. For me this came 5 years after my diagnosis. There is currently no cure for Parkinson’s, only therapies to alleviate some symptoms. So I decided to fight by attempting to give my body the best chance it had to fight this disease, I went on the offense by focusing on Diet and Exercise with the goal of reducing inflammation in my body. In doing so I feel like I have slowed progression and while there is no way to conclusively tell if this has worked, feeling it has worked is sometimes just as strong as knowing.

Everyone is on their own journey, be it Parkinson’s or whatever, and if you are still in the dark stage of the journey (like I went through) don’t’ fret. When the time is right you will go on the offensive and find hope.

I have Parkinson’s, it doesn’t have me,

Derek
